No dia 31 de Janeiro de 2020, o produtor musical e escritor Vespertine foi ao programa Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Divulgando o projeto conhecido como TEOTWAWKI Project e seu primeiro single, Darkside, em colaboração com a cantora coreana Yoona, Vespertine comentou sobre o futuro do projeto e explicou um pouco mais de seu conceito. Ao fim do programa, a música foi tocada e Vespertine e Oliver dançaram no centro do palco para animar a plateia.
A entrevista começou com perguntas sobre o próprio. Vespertine contou que já havia trabalhado com outras cantoras na parte de produção musical e feito ensaios fotográficos para diversos famosos, mas seu reconhecimento só veio com a produção de Spirit Animal da estoniana Kerli em 2018. Assim, ele conseguiu assinar um contrato com a gravadora no fim do ano passado. Desde então, começou a arquitetar o projeto que hoje conhecemos como TEOTWAWKI.
É um acrônimo para "The End Of The World As We Know It" (O Fim do Mundo como o Conhecemos). O nome foi estrategicamente pensado, segundo Vespertine, pois até o fim do ano, ele pretende realmente acabar com este mundo. Ele não adentrou muito em detalhes, mas disse que poderia fazer isso quando o terceiro single do projeto fosse lançado.
Vespertine também confirmou que o segundo single para o mês de fevereiro já está sendo produzido e que em breve teremos notícias. Ele diz que a parceria já foi escolhida e que a música já está sendo produzida. Provavelmente será lançada no meio de fevereiro, assim como Darkside foi no meio de janeiro.
Quando perguntado sobre o que era o lado negro, Vespertine respondeu que as pessoas tem uma visão distorcida da escuridão e que esta não precisa necessariamente ser algo ruim. A letra, segundo ele, está intimamente ligada ao conceito do projeto e que não é preciso uma profunda explicação, já que ainda este ainda está no início. O produtor afirma que aos poucos, o projeto irá se autoexplicar e tudo ficará mais claro.
